Lung development Flashcards
What term is given to the complications that preterm infants get due to low levels of surfactant?
Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS)
What is the optimal time frame between when glucocorticoids are given (to induce surfactant), and the delivery of the baby?
24-48hrs afterwards
What else can be given besides glucocorticoids to help the baby breathe?
Artificial surfactant
What are the five stages of lung development?
Embryonic Pseudoglandular Canalicular Saccular Alveolar
Briefly describe the process of lung development
Initially branches as bronchi, then bronchioles, then alveolar ducts
How many generations of branching are there generally?
23
When does the embryonic lung stage occur?
3.5w - 8th week
When does the pseudoglandular stage occur?
5w-16thweek
When does the canalicular stage occur?
16thw - 26th week
When does the saccular stage occur?
24th week to 38th week
When does the alveolar stage occur?
36th to 38th week !
In which trimester is surfactant produced?
Begins to be produced in the third trimester
What is the difference between bronchi and bronchioles?
Bronchioles do not contain cartilage and glands, whereas bronchi do.
What two zones make up the respiratory tract?
Conducting zone
Respiratory zone
What are the subdivisions of the conducting zone?
Segmental bronchi;
Intersegmental bronchi;
Bronchioli;
Terminal bronchioli
