Lumbar plexus Flashcards
The lumbar plexus is created by
spinal nerves
T12-L4.
The lumbar plexus is housed within
the
psoas major; Between the two heads of origin
Primary Nerves
Femoral Nerve
Obturator nerve
Secondary nerves
Iliohypogastric nerve
Ilioinguinal nerve
Femoral Nerve Pathway
Leaves plexus
Travels anterior/inferior
Exits pelvis deep to inguinal ligament
Travels through femoral triangle as lateral
neurovascular structure
Travels distally down anterior thigh
Terminates proximal to patello-femoral joint
Femoral Nerve Innervates
Psoas
Iliacus
Sartorius
Quadriceps group
Obturator Nerve Pathway
Leaves plexus
Travels inferior/medial
Exits pelvis through obturator foramen
Travels distally down medial thigh
Terminates proximal to tibiofemoral joint
Obturator Nerve Innervates
Gracillis
Adductors magnus, longus, brevis
Pectineus
Obturator externus
Iliohypogastric Nerve Innervates

Structures creating the borders:
Inguinal ligament - superior border
Sartorius - lateral border
Adductor longus - medial border
