Lumbar Operative & Rehab Considerations Flashcards
What is the biggest predictor of having lumbar surgery?
Degnerative spondylothesis
What are 2 emergent conditions that would result in lumbar surgerey?
- Cauda Equina Syndrome
- Trauma resulting in gross instability
What are 3 nonemergent conditions that could result in lumbar surgery?
- Stable fractures
- herinated disc with declining neurologic functioning
- spinal stenosis with declining neurologica functioning
What type of surgery is this?
removal or structural elements of the spine thought to be impinging upon the neural canal
Decompression surgery
What type of surgery is this?
- Form of surgery which theorized mechanism of pain is the result of ‘instability’
- seeks to decrease the accessory motion thus stabilizing the spine
Fusion Surgery
What type of surgery is this?
Prosthetic replacement for damaged intervertebral disc
Disc arthroplasty
In decompression surgery what is the purpose of removing the ‘offending structure’?
To free the nerves
What happens in a laminectomy?
Removing of some bone that supports the lumbar region
(often done with a fusion)
What is a discectomy?
Removal of herniated disc
What type of surgery is this?
- replacement of the IVD
- 2 metal plates with a core that is polyethylene
- has been evaluated with single and multi-level use
Disc Arthroplasty
