LS8 - Correlations Flashcards
Correlations
A technique for analysing the strength of the relationship between co-variables.
Co-Variables
2 Quantitative Variables
Positive Correlation
As one variable increases the other variables increases as well
Negative Correlation
As one variables increases the other variables decreases.
No Correlation
There is no realtionships between the two variables at all.
Correlation Co-Efficient
The strength of a coefficient
Advantages Of Correlations
Allows psychologists to establish the strength of the relationship between two variables and measure it precisely.
Aloows researchers to investigate things that could not be mainpulated experimentally
Once a correlation has been conducted predictions can be made about one of the variables based on what is known about the other variable.
Disadvantages Of Correlations
Doesn’t demonstrate cause and effect - we can’t tell which variables influences the other.
Confounding variable - the two variables measured may not be related, but a third variable may influence both.
Only linear relationships, doesn’t measure curvilinear relationships where there is a positive relationship up to a certain point, after which it becomes negative.
