LS1 - Content Analysis Flashcards
Content Analysis
An observational technique that studies people indirectly through qualitative data. It helps classify responses in a systematic nature, allowing for clear conclusions to be drawn.
When Is Content Analysis Certi?
When conducting research that would otherwise be considered unethical, data in the public domain can be accessed meaning explicit consent isn’t required.
Coding
Where the researcher develops categories for the data, this helps reach succinct conclusions about the data - providing a framework to convert the material into meaningful data that can be analysed.
Steps In Content Analysis
After finding the data and highlighting key facts, the data will be categorised. These categories will then be reviewed to decide if any refinement is to be done and then can tally how often different categories come up, the data can now be statistically tested.
Thematic Analysis
Helps identify themes from qualitative data, which can either be implicit or explicit.
Steps In Thematic Analysis
Same shit, but the researcher tries to link the categories to themes, once the themes are identified they will be reviewed to decide their relevance at which point comparisons can be drawn between major and minor themes.
Strengths
- High Ecological Validity
Weaknesses
- Provides Subjective Data
- Cultural Differences
Provides Subjective Data (-)
The researcher may interpret qualitative data in a completely different manner from how they were intended.
Cultural Differences (-)
May result in inconsistencies in coding, as language may be translated different, which affects the validity and accuracy of any findings.
