what is hygiene?
being clean
hygiene mean keeping our bodies healthy and clean to prevent disease
what is a diet?
what we eat everyday
why should you not share your toothbrush, comb, facecloth or hairbrush?
to ensure that you do not share germs
where do germs like living?
on or in places that don’t get cleaned often or are not clean properly or very dirty
why should you clean garbage bins, toilets and bathrooms regularly?
to prevent the breeding of germs
how long should should you wash your hand for?
20 seconds with soap and water
how should you wash you hands if you don’t have soap and running water?
alcohol-based hand sanitiser
how often and for how long should you brush your teet?
at least twice a day
for a two whole minutes
what should you do when you sneeze or cough?
cover you nose and mouth with you bent elbow so that you don’t get germs on your hands
what do germs cause?
diseases
unpleasant problems like body rashes, diarrhoea, throat/ear/eye infections
what types of food do we all need for good hygiene?
carbohydrates (starch & sugar)
proteins
diary products
fresh fruit and vegetable
small amount of fats
water
what is in healthy food that we need, especially growing children?
vitamins and nutrition
why are sweet and cooldrinks bad for your teeth?
they contain ACID and SUGARS that breakdown and wear away your tooth enamel, and then HOLES develop in your teeth that can lead to TOOTHACHE AND GUM INFECTIONS
What are three reasons for brushing you teeth with toothpaste every morning and night?
it will clean your teeth from food
get rid of bacteria
keep your breath from smelling bad
what does it mean to eat a balanced diet?
eating a wide VARIETY of foods
in the right PROPORTION AND
the right AMOUNTS of food and drink
for a HEALTHY BODY weight
what is the decayed part of a tooth called?
a cavity
what is pollution?
what spoils and dirties the air, water and land
what is industrial waste?
chemicals that are left over when products are manufactured
what is a wetland?
land that is saturated with water, often called marshes or swamps
how does pollution make us ill?
poisons, germs and chemicals in water
- go into the fruit & veg we eat
- leak into the soil and go into plants that we and animals eat
- enter the fish we eat
how do trees keep our environment healthy?
clean polluted air and make oxygen
they can block out noise pollution
what is arbour day?
one day in arbour week (from 1 to 7 september) when schools, businesses and communities plant trees
what is your environment?
the space that surrounds you
(could be your home, your school or your community)
what is a healthy home environment?
it has fresh circulating air, clean water that is not polluted and where the family uses soaps, shampoos and cleaning chemicals that are safe/natural/non-toxic
what does ventilating mean?
allowing fresh air to pass through by opening windows and doors
why is watching tV, playing computer games and going on your phone too much a bad idea?
these items emit radiation - electrical and magnetic radiation is a type of energy that is released when you use them and too much radiation can give you headaches, a higher temperature or make you vomit or even damager your internal organs
what is air pollution?
when the air we breath is dirty usually because of SMOKE coming from factories and machinery, and motor car exhaust fumes that cause smog
what is water pollution?
when factories and cities pump their waste which contains POISONS into rivers, or when farming chemicals i(fertiliser and pesticides) n the soil are washed into rivers by rain. This harms fish, birds and other wildlife and makes it dark, smelly and unfit for drinking
what is land pollution?
when farmers use chemicals that harm the soil - fertilisers (for plant nutrition) and pesticides (to kill insects)
