LRL Flashcards
LRL is …
kernmantle construction
Nylon core (kern)
sheath (mantle)
polyestor and nylon filaments
kernmantle rope
Filaments- individual thread twisted to form each strand of the core and sheath
STRANDS- nylon filaments twisted to form strands which make up the core
IDENTIFICATION TAPE- printed with the man name and production standards. Runs length of rope batch and production date.
CORE- parallel strands, left and right hand lay to reduce rope twist and spin
SHEATH- braided to protect the core
specifications
Diam- 13mm
Colour- orange with blue fleck
blue with orange fleck
Safe working load- 272 kg (15:1 safety factor) 4080kg
Fibre- Nylon 6 core, polyester sheath
Melting point- 250
Elongation 3%@80 kg
Strength 70%core 30% sheath
care and maintenance
camsue
chemical
exposure, fumes or direct contact,
solvents, acids, alkalis
abrasion
most significant cause of line failure resulting in serious injury or death
DO-protect edges
DONT- stand/walk/jump on rope (grit or sharp objects in rope)
- draw or drag line across ground or surfaces
- where a fixed line contacts an edge abrasion may occur
mechanical damage
blunt objects causing damage to core not sheath.
feel for change in shape/diameter
edges or bends under load.
impact from solid objects
shock loading
shock load due to a fall will be permanently weakened.
*Do not let slack form in system.
any rope after shock must be removed from service
UV
polonged exposure causes damage.
Minimise to sunlight or flourescent lighting
Extreme heat
causes melting
-friction can cause damage and loss of strength
signs of damage
pilling
friction
knot protocols
strict
slect the right knot fo the job
place tension on the line to set and tighten the knot
remove knots when not in use
inspect the knots
check- 2nd FF check with LRL knots
Tail 150mm
LRL knots
figure 8 stopper
figure 8 on the bight
figure 8 follow through
Alpine butterfly
double fishermans knot
After use of LRL
- inspected b4 and after every use
- After use, where work is done, fill out the rope card and send to FS10
-history of usage recorded at FS10
-If damage found or suspected, fill out rope card and send rope card AND rope to 10 - FS10 carry replacement and spare SW@h kit components
Advantages of a good knot
TRUSS
easy to tie
easy to recognise
easy to undo
won’t slip
won’t reduce strength of rope too much.
