E.coli - gram -ve baccillus
Klebsiella pneumoniae -> gram -ve, anaerobic, rod shaped
What circumstances should nitrofurantoin be avoided
eGFR of <45
Third trimester
Other alternatives for Abx (3)
Amoxicillin
Cefalexin
Privemeciilinam
what is cystitis and urethritis?
Cystitis - bladder infection
Urethritis - infection of urethra
What iX findings is more likely for UTI
+ve for:
nitrite or leukocytes
and BLOOD
What is meant by recurrent UTI
2 episodes in 6 months
OR
3 in 12 months
How long to u treat men w lower UTIs and w what
Nitrofurantoin for 7 days
Asymptomatic bacteriuria in preganamt women - treat or not treat?
Treat w Abx, send MSU. Risk of pyleonephritis
associated with foetal loss, preterm delivery and low birth weight
Urine dipstick should not be used for diagnosis of UTI in WHO? And what Ix do use instead

Urine culture
23 year old women
24hr hx dysuria, visible haemturia + general malaise.
O/E soft abdomen w mild suprapubic tenderness. No renal angle temderness + bowel sounds normal.
TX?
Oral abx + MSU ( for all women sus of UTI w or w/o visible haemturia)
