Swollen tracheal wall and a narrowed tracheal lumen
How is tracheitis treated
Augmentin = co amoxiclav
How does bronchitis present
loose rattly cough with Post-tussive vomit
Chest has no wheeze or crackles
What is the usual history of bacterial bronchitis
Following a URTI
Lasts 4 weeks
What is the presentation of bronchiolitis
Nasal stuffiness, tachypnoea and poor feeding
Crackles with or without wheeze heard
What usually causes bronchiolitis
RSV - respiratory syncytial virus
What medications are proven to work for bronchiolitis
None
What is the presentation of a LRTI
fever >38.5 degrees celcius
SOB
cough
grunting
reduced or bronchial breath sounds
What does wheeze in a LRTI usually indicate
Probably not a bacterial infection
What is the management of community acquired pneumonia
Nothing if mild symptoms
Oral amoxycillin first line
Oral macrolide second line
IV if patient is vomiting
What is the difference between LRTI and bronchiolitis
Bronchiolitis is specifically in <12 months old while LRTI is all ages
LRTI has more rapid onset of symptoms
LRTI has a fever while bronchiolitis rarely has fever
What is empyema
Complication of pneumonia
Infection into the pleural space in the form of pus
What is the presentation of empyema
Chest pain and very unwell
What is the treatment of empyema
Antibiotics with or without drainage
Should tracheitis be treated with antibiotics and which ones if yes
Yes - augmentin
