Lower Leg Flashcards
Ligamnets between the Fibula and Tibia:
Anterior Ligament of Head of Fibula
Posterior Ligament of Head of Fibula
Anterior Tibiofibular Ligament
Posterior Tibiofibular Ligament
Interosseus Tibiofibular Ligament
Inferior Transverse (Tibiofibular) Ligament
Anterior Ligament of Head of Fibula
Location: This ligament is situated at the front (anterior) aspect of the head of the fibula.
Function: It contributes to the stability of the proximal fibula-tibia joint.
Posterior Ligament of Head of Fibula
Location: This ligament is found at the back (posterior) aspect of the head of the fibula.
Function: Similar to the anterior ligament, it helps stabilize the proximal fibula-tibia joint.
Anterior Tibiofibular Ligament
Location: It connects the anterior aspect of the tibia to the fibula.
Function: This ligament is part of the syndesmosis and helps stabilize the articulation between the tibia and fibula.
Posterior Tibiofibular Ligament
Location: It connects the posterior aspect of the tibia to the fibula.
Function: Like the anterior tibiofibular ligament, it contributes to the stability of the syndesmotic joint.
Interosseus Tibiofibular Ligament
Location: This ligament is located between the tibia and fibula.
Function: It plays a key role in connecting and stabilizing the tibia and fibula along their shafts, particularly in the middle and lower leg.
Inferior Transverse (Tibiofibular) Ligament
Location: This ligament is located at the distal end of the tibia and fibula.
Function: It helps to stabilize the distal fibula-tibia joint, especially the syndesmotic region near the ankle.
Joints Connecting the Tibia And Fibula
Syndesmosis
Proximal Tibiofibular Joint:
Distal Tibiofibular Joint
Syndesmosis:
Type: Syndesmosis is a fibrous joint where the bones are connected by fibrous tissue.
Ligaments Involved:
Anterior Tibiofibular Ligament
Posterior Tibiofibular Ligament
Interosseus Tibiofibular Ligament
Inferior Transverse (Tibiofibular) Ligament
Proximal Tibiofibular Joint:
Type: This joint is classified as a synovial joint.
Ligaments Involved:
Anterior Ligament of Head of Fibula
Posterior Ligament of Head of Fibula
Distal Tibiofibular Joint (Syndesmosis at Ankle):
Type: Another syndesmosis is formed at the distal ends of the tibia and fibula, especially near the ankle.
Ligaments Involved:
Anterior Tibiofibular Ligament
Posterior Tibiofibular Ligament
Inferior Transverse (Tibiofibular) Ligament
