Head Flashcards
What are the Fibrous Joints of the Skull?
What do they Join together?
Coronal Suture: Parietal + Frontal
Sagittal Suture: Parietal + Parietal
Squamous Suture: Parietal + Temporal
Lambdoid Suture Parietal + Occipital
What Bones form the Orbit of the Skull?
7
Frontal bone
Sphenoid bone
Ethmoid bone
Zygomatic bone
Maxilla
Palatine bone
Lacrimal
What are the 3 Regions where the Sutures Come in Contact with each other?
Lambda - Sagittal and Lambdoid Sutures
Bregma - Sagittal and Coronal Sutures
Pterion - Coronal and Squamous Suture
What Ligaments are on the Mandible?
3
Sphenomandibular Ligament
Stylomandibular Ligament
Temporomandibular Ligament
Sphenomandibular Ligament
&
Stylomandibular Ligament
- Spine of Sphenoid - Lingula of Mandible
- Styloid Process (Temporal bone) - Mandible Angle
Both part of TMJ
Temporomandibular Ligament
Fibrous Capsule and Lateral Ligament
of TMJ
The fibrous capsule is a dense, fibrous structure that surrounds the temporomandibular joint. It is also known as the joint capsule.
The lateral ligament is a thickening of the fibrous capsule of the temporomandibular joint. It has two components: the superior band and the inferior band. These bands provide lateral stability to the joint. The superior band is taut when the mouth is closed, while the inferior band is taut when the mouth is open.
Superior and Inferior Articular Cavity of TMJ movements?
What Divides them?
S: depression and elevation
I: protrusion and retrusion.
Divided by the Articular Disc
What is the TMJ?
Temporomandibular Joint:
unique joint that connects the jawbone (mandible) to the skull, specifically to the temporal bone
What movements can the TMJ Perform?
Hinge Movement (Depression and Elevation):
Gliding or Sliding Movement (Protrusion and Retrusion):
Lateral Movement (Side-to-Side Movement):
Combination Movements: biting, talking, eating, swallowing etc.
