Thomas test
- Test for: tight iliopsoas
- Technique:
A. Pt brings knees to chest
B. Brings one leg down to table
*extended leg lifted off table = +
Ober test
- Test for: tight IT band
- Technique:
A. Pt lateral recumbent
B. Knee flexed, hip slightly extended, hip abd
*knee doesn’t fall toward table w/o support = +
Trendelenburg test
- Test for: gluteus medius weakness
- Technique:
A. Pt stands on one foot
B. If hanging hip drops = + for weakness in glut medius of stance leg
Bulge test
- Test for: knee joint effusion
- Technique: compress tissue above patella inferiorly toward joint
* fluid bulge = +
Ballottment test
- Test for: knee joint effusion
- Technique: ant to post pressure on patella of extended knee
* boggy/spongy texture = +
Patellar grind test
- Test for: chondromalacia patella, patellofemoral syndrome
- Technique: ant to post pressure on patella and rock patella across femoral condyles

Apley’s compression and distraction test
- Test for: compression - meniscus tear, distraction - ligamentous stability
- Technique: pt prone and knee flex 90
A. Compress or distract using ankle as leverage

McMurray test
- Test for: meniscus tear
- Technique:
A. Medial: tibia ER, hip abd and flex -> hip add and extended, valgus force on knee
B. Lateral: tibial IR, hip add and flex -> hip abd and extended, varus force on knee
*pain/clicking = +
Anterior drawer test
- Test for: ACL tear
- Technique: knee flex 90, stabilize foot, pull ant on prox tibia
* pain/laxity = +
Lachman test
- Test for: ACL tear
- Technique: knee flex 20-30, stabilize post distal femur, pull ant on prox tibia
* pain/laxity = +
Posterior drawer test
- Test for: PCL tear
- Technique: knee flex 90, stabilize foot, push post on prox tibia
* pain/laxity = +
Valgus/varus test
- Test for: valgus - MCL tear, varus - LCL tear
- Technique: knee flex 15 and off table
A. Stabilize prox tibia
B. Stress w/ medial and lateral forces at distal tibia
*pain/gaping of joint = +
Anterior drawer test of the ankle
- Test for: talofibular ligament tear
- Technique: slight plantarflexion
A. Stabilize distal tibia
B. Translate foot ant from calcaneous
*>5-8mm translation more than uninjured = +
Talar tilt test
- Test for: ant talofibular and calcaneofibular ligaments
- Technique: plantarflexion, stabilize medial distal tibia
A. Invert foot/ankle
*talar tilt >10 degrees more than uninjured = +
Compression/squeeze test
- Test for: tibia-fibula syndesmosis injury
- Technique: squeeze tibia and fibula together
* pain = +
External rotation foot/ ankle
- Test for: syndesmosis tibia and fibula injury
- Technique: externally rotate foot and ankle (plantarflexion)
* pain = +
Crossed ankle test
- Test for: syndesmosis of tibia and fibula injury
- Technique: pt cross affected ankle over opposite knee
A. External rotation force on foot
*pain = +
Thompson test
- Test for: Achilles’ tendon injury
- Technique: pt prone, squeeze calf musculature
* plantar flexion absent = +
Morton’s squeeze test
- Test for: Morton’s neuroma
- Technique: squeeze lateral and medial aspects distal MTs
