Lower Extremity Muscles Flashcards
Sartorius Origin/Insertion
O: ASIS
I: Superior part of medial surface of tibia
Sartorius Action
Hip joint: Flexes, abducts, externally rotates thigh
Knee: Flexor
Tensor Fasciae Latae Origin/Insertion
O: ASIS
I: IT Band to lateral condyle of the tibia
Tensor Fasciae Latae Action
Hip: Abducts and internally rotates thigh, pelvic stability
Gluteus Medius Origin/Insertion
O: External surface of ilium between the anterior and posterior gluteal lines
I: Lateral surface of greater trochanter of the femur
Gluteus Medius Action
Hip: Abducts and internally rotates thigh, pelvic stability
Adductor Longus Origin/Insertion
O: Body of pubis inferior to pubic crest
I: Middle third linea aspera of femur
Adductor Longus Action
Adducts thighs
Adductor Brevis Origin/Insertion
O: Body and inferior ramus of pubis
I: Pectineal line and proximal line of linea aspera
Adductor Brevis Action
Adducts thigh and slightly flexes it
Adductor Magnus Origin/Insertion
Adductor Part
O: Inferior ramus of pubis, ramus of ischium
I: Gluteal tuberosity, linea aspera, medial supracondylar line
Hamstring Part:
O: Ischial Tuberosity
I: Adductor tubercle of femur
Adductor Magnus Action
Adducts thigh
Adductor Part: Flexes thigh
Hamstring Part: Extends thigh
Rectus Femoris Origin/Insertion
O: AIIS and Ilium superior to acetabulum
I: Via quadriceps tendon independent attachments to base of patella
Rectus Femoris Action
steadies hip joint and helps iliopsoas flex thigh; extend leg at knee joint
Semitendinosus Origin/Insertion
O: Ischial tuberosity
I: Media surface of superior part of tibia
Semimembranosus Origin/Insertion
O: Ischial tuberosity
I: Posterior part of medial condyle of tibia
Semimembranosus and Semitendinosus Action
Extend thigh; Flex knee and medially rotate it when knee is flexed
Biceps Femoris Origin/Insertion
Long head origin: Ischial tuberosity
Short head origin: Linea aspera and lateral supracondylar line
Insertion: Lateral side of fibula
Biceps Femoris Action
Flexes leg and rotates laterally when knee is flexed; extends thigh
Gluteus Maximus Origin/Insertion
O: Ilium posterior to gluteal line; dorsal surface of sacrum and coccyx
I: IT tract which inserts into lateral condyle of tibia; gluteal tuberosity
Gluteus Maximus Action
Extends thigh and assists in lateral rotation; Steadies thigh and assist in rising from a sitting position
Vastus Lateralis Origin/Insertion
O: Greater trochanter and lateral lip of linea aspera of femur
I: Quadriceps tendon to base of the patella
Vastus Lateralis Action
Extends knee
