Lower: Bony Landmarks Flashcards
ASIS (Anterior superior iliac spine)
Find iliac crest and go anterior/medial
Iliac crest
Located higher on men
Iliac fossa
Find ASIS, press down next to iliac crest, ask the partner to breathe in and out deeply and sink in and curl fingers around the iliac crest.
Ischial tuberosity
Use fist to press into the thigh and go superior until the bone. Pressing into it should move the whole body.
PSIS (posterior superior iliac spine)
Follow iliac crest posteriorly. Should feel like bumps next to the dimples.
Adductor tubercle
Above the medial epicondyle of the femur. Press down into it.
Gluteal tuberosity
Prone or side-lying. Find greater trochanter. Go down from it and curl fingers around in the posterior direction. Ask partner to raise their leg to engage the glute max and follow the muscle fibers.
Greater trochanter
Highest point when side-lying. Rotate hip to feel the movement.
Lateral epicondyle of the femur
Make sure the knee is bent 90 degrees. It will be above head of fibula.
Medial epicondyle of the femur
Make sure the knee is bent 90 degrees
Medial malleolus
Part of tibia
Pes anserine
Medial from tibial tuberosity. Doesn’t feel like anything. Located slightly below and across from Gerdy’s tubercle. Can follow semitendinosus tendon from below the knee to get there.
Tibial plateau
Find 2 soft spots on the knee (eyes). Press pointing down and make sure the knee is flexed 90 degrees.
Tibial tuberosity
Gerdy’s/tibial tubercle
Lateral side across from tibial tuberosity
Head of fibula
Below the lateral epicondyle of the femur when knee is bent at 90 degrees
Lateral malleolus
Part of fibula
Talus
Press down in the middle between tendons on the anterior/dorsal side of the ankle. Plantar flex to feel the talus bone.
Navicular tubercle
Go from below the arch of the foot on the medial side
Tuberosity of the 5th metatarsal
Follow the lateral border of the foot starting from the pinkie until you feel a bump and hook/press into it in the direction of the pinkie.
Anterior talofibular ligament
Line between the talus and the lateral maleolus.
LCL (FCL)
Straighten leg. Show the line between the lateral epicondyle of the femur and the head of fibula.
MCL (TCL)
Straighten the leg. Show the line between the medial epicondyles of the femur and tibia.
