LOVELL ET AL (AIMS, MAIN CONCEPT) Flashcards
When was Lovell et al’s study conducted?
2006
What was the aim of Lovell et al (2006)?
- To compare whether the same CBT therapy would be more effective adminsitered over the phone or face-to-face, in the treatment of OCD.
What was the type of CBT used in the treatment?
- Exposure therapy and response prevention.
ERP is a therapy that encourages you to face your fears and let obsessive thoughts occur without ‘putting them right’ or ‘neutralising’ them with compulsions.
What was the hypothesis of Lovell et al (2003)?
- Therapeutic outcomes would be similar for both methods
What does NICE stand for?
- National Institute for Clinical Excellence.
Main context- Why is administering CBT as a treatment so difficult?
NICE in the UK has shown that CBT as a treatment for OCD is very effective, but face-to-face sessions (45-60 mins) once a week for several weeks can be:
* Expensive and time-consuming for the provider, resulting in long waiting lists.
* Long waiting lists can result in worsening untreated symptoms (that in turn result increased treatment times).
Main context- Has there been attempts to make CBT more accessible?
- Computerised CBT
- Self-Help
- Over the phone CBT
How would over-the phone CBT reduce the problems associated with traditional CBT?
- Telephone CBT is shorter: Resulting in shorter waiting lists, relieving pressure on providers.
- More accessible- reduces need for travel, and can work around work/school schedules and family obligations.
- Harm reduction- ppl with OCD may find the experince of travelling to sessions each week distressing due to the nature of their obsessions (fear of contamination)
What do researchers conclude about the effectiveness of over the phone CBT?
Mohr et al (2000) suggested that CBT by phone has been increasing and is more accessible to patients who struggle to attend a clinic.
Taylor (2003) showed CBT by phone to be effective and less expensive treatment for those with OCD.
