Long term NIS: Colon and Rectum

A

Malabsorption: increase intake and modify sources of malabsorbed nutrients, monitor nutrition and wt status

Altered liver function, cirrhosis: increase intake of malabsorbed nutrients, monitor liver enzymes, if cirrhotic follow those recs

Wt change: monitor wt, ensure balanced intake for maintaining or achieving a healthy diet, balance intake with phys activity

Irregular BMs: alter fiber intake, consume adequate fluids, use pro- or pre-biotics if appropriate

Enteritis, chronic diarrhea: increase fluid/ lytes intake, decrease fat, adjust fiber and limit dairy intake

Bowel strictures/ obstructions: depends on location of stricture, provide EN/ PN as appropriate

A

Xerostomia: ensure needs are met with oral intake if possible, promote “wet” foods and good oral care, alter food and beverage consistency as needed, use ONS, consider nutrition support

Dysphagia: consult SLP, alter food and beverage consistency as needed, use ONS, monitor wt and nutrition status

Tooth decay, periodontal disease: alter food and beverage consistency as needed, use ONS, alter food temperature if tooth sensitivity is an issue, alter types of foods consumed if dysgeusia is an issue, consult a dental professional
