Epiphysis
The rounded end portions of long bones.
Diaphysis
The shaft or central part of a long bone.
Cartilage
Connective tissue that protects joints an bones. It reduces pain during movement and assists with movement. The ones over joints are called hyaline cartilage.
Periosteum
The sheath surrounding bones that supplys blood, nerves and cells to the bone.
Compact
Dense bone that forms the outer layer of bone.
Spongy
Has a porous, spongy structure.
Medullary Cavity
The hollow part of the bone that contains marrow.
Red Marrow
Spongy bone that resides at both ends; contains blood stem cells that become RBCs, WBCs, or platelets.
Yellow Marrow
Made of adipose tissue and contains stem cells that can become cartilage, fat, or bone cells.
