unpleasant feeling connected with isolation and the need for human intimacy or interpersonal intimacy.
Def. Lonely
missing the contact of another who is far from one either by death or physical separation or emotional separateness.
Def. Lonesome
an adjective used to describe a lonely person.

a chosen state of being by oneself

a condition or feeling of being estranged or separated from self or others.

Sullivan’s belief about Human Behavior:
Oriented to the pursuit of satisfaction & pursuit of security.
Central Theme: Anxiety is the prime motivator of building self esteem.
Self-system: personality concept (interconnected network of beliefs) resulting from relationships with parents & used to minimize anxiety.
Sublimation: substituting/ channeling negative emotions into positive emotions.
Selective Inattention: perceptual defense by ignoring, rejecting anxiety-provoking experiences.
Dissociation: impulses, desires, needs that a person refuses to allow into awareness.
Personification: image one has of oneself: “good me”, “bad me”, “not me”–hidden in the unconscious.

- physical appearance neglected

- inability to give nurturance to others
Alienation & Estrangement lead to what 3 things:
- Powerlessness, normlessness–socially accepted behaviors are no longer effective
- dependence on life styles that emphasize withdrawal & retreat to feel secure
- Dependence on rituals to deal w/alienation, psychosomatic behavior
