LOM Ch.9 Flashcards
Anorchism
Congenital absence of one or both testes
Azoospermia
Absence of motile sperm in the semen
Balanitis
Inflammation of the glans penis
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
Benign growth of cells within the prostate gland; symptoms include urinary obstruction and inability to empty the bladder completely
Castration
Surgical excision of testicles or ovaries
Chlamydial infection
Bacterial invasion of the urethra and reproductive tract
Circumcision
Surgical procedure to remove the prepuce of the penis
Cryogenic surgery
A procedure that carefully destroys certain cells by freezing
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
Infection of the skin and mucous membranes in the anogenital region
Hypospadias
Congenital abnormality in which the male urethral opening is on the undersurface of the penis instead of at its tip
Impotence
The inability of a male to sustain an erection or achieve ejaculation
Interstitial cells of the testes
Specialized cells that lie adjacent to the seminiferous tubules in the testes; produce testosterone; also called Leydig cells
Ligation
Tying and binding off of the free ends with sutures
Oligospermia
A male fertility issue defined as a low sperm concentration in the ejaculate
Orchiectomy
Surgical removal of one or both testicles
Orchiopexy
A surgery to move an undescended testicle into the scrotum and permanently fix it there
Orchitis
Inflammation of one or both testicles
Parenchymal tissue
Essential distinctive cells of an organ; in the testis the seminiferous tubules that produce sperm are this kind of tissue
Phimosis
Narrowing (stricture) of the opening of the prepuce over the glans penis
Prepuce
Foreskin; fold of skin covering the tip of the penis
Prostatectomy
A surgical operation to remove all or part of the prostate
Prostate gland
Exocrine gland at the base of the male urinary bladder; secretes one of the fluid parts of semen into the urethra during ejaculation
Purulent
Pus filled

Pen/o
Penis
Cryptorchidism
Undescended testicles
Ejaculation
Ejection of sperm and fluid from the male urethra
Epididymis
One pair of long tightly coiled tubes above each testis; stores and carries sperm from seminiferous tubules to the vas deferens
Flagellum
Flat-like projection on sperm cells that make them motile
Gonorrhea
Inflammation of the genital tract mucosa, caused by infection with gonococci (berry shaped bacteria)
Herpes simplex virus (HSV)
An infection that causes herpes which can appear in various parts of the body, most commonly on the genitals or mouth
Scrotum
External sac that contains the testes
Semen
Spermatozoan (sperm cells) and seminal fluid (prostatic and seminal vesicle secretions) discharged from the urethra during ejaculation
Hydrocelectomy
Surgical procedure performed to correct an accumulation of peritoneal fluid in a membrane which covers the front and sides of the male testes
Seminal vesicles
Paired sac-like exocrine glands that secrete fluid (a major component of semen) into the vas deferens
Seminiferous tubules
Narrow coiled tubules that produce sperm in the testes
Varicocele
Enlarged, dilated veins near the testicle
Vas deferens
Narrow tube carrying sperm from the epididymis toward the urethra; aka the ductus deferens
Vasectomy
Bilateral surgical removal of a part of the vas deferens
Vasovasostomy
A surgery by which vasectomies are partially reversed
Varicocelectomy
Surgical treatment of varicocele by excision of the affected veins often with removal of part of the scrotum
Prostate specific antigen (PSA)
An antigenic enzyme released by the prostate and found in abnormally high concentrations in the blood of men with prostate cancer
Seminoma
A common tumor arising from the embryonic cells in the testes
Spermatogenesis
The production or development of mature spermatozoa
Spermolytic
Refers to anything that causes spermatozoa destruction
Syphilis
Chronic STD caused by a spirochete (spiral shaped bacterium)
Testis
Male gonad that produces spermatozoa and the hormone testosterone (plural testes)
Testosterone
Hormone secreted by the interstitial tissue of the testes; responsible for male sex characteristics
Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP)
Excision of benign prostatic hyperplasia using a resectoscope through the urethra
Androgen
A male sex hormone such as testosterone
