What is inductive reasoning?

A
  1. Part-to-whole reasoning used to determine the validity of an informal argument
  2. By starting with evidence that can be observed and compiled and works towards generalizations (example: 11 out of 12 houses on my street have a chimney, therefore the twelfth house will have a chimney)

What is deductive reasoning?

A
  1. Whole-to-part reasoning that determines the validity of a formal argument.
  2. The conclusion of such an argument must, necessarily, be true if the premises used to support it are true
  3. Starts from general observations to a specific conclusion
    (All men are mortal; Socrates is a man; Therefore, Socrates is mortal)
