Loftus and Palmer Evaluation Flashcards
lab experiment: strengths
high control for extraneous variables- highly standardised procedures as videos all taken from the same angle so doesn’t largely effect speed estimate
lab experiment: weaknesses
lack of ecological validity- as it wasn’t a real accident, there was a lack of emotional involvement which in a real scenario may effect perception of speed
quantitative data: strengths
easy presentation and analysis of results- can draw easy conclusions from numerical data
quantitative data: weaknesses
- lack of insight toward why the speeds were estimated as they were- can be seen as superficial
ethical considerations: weakness
- informed consent not fully given- if it was, demand characteristics may have shown
ecological validity: weakness
staged car accidents used which may alter how realistically memory is retained, as there is also a lack of emotional involvement which may be present in real life
validity: strength
successfully measured in particular the effect of leading questions on memory, as different words led to different speed estimates
reliability: strength
highly standardised procedure with clear set instructions, allowing experiment to be repeated
sampling bias: strengths
- easy to obtain ptcpts
- time saving
sampling bias: weaknesses
- lack of population validity- ptcpts less likely to be drivers than majority of population due to age range
- small sample
