Grant et al on context- dependency effects Evaluation Flashcards

1
Q

flab (field and lab) experiment: strengths

A
  1. high control for extraneous variables- highly standardised procedure as set instructions given for procedure
  2. mundane realism= good ecological validity- reading an article and trying to recall information mirrors the reality of students

Q

flab (field and lab) experiment: weaknesses

A

due to varying conditions/ environments of study, extraneous variables may be hard to control for

3
Q

quantitative data: strengths

A

easy presentation and analysis of results- can easily compare conditions

Q

quantitative data: weaknesses

A

lack of qualitative data decreases insight towards ptcpts thought processes throughout experiment

Q

ethical considerations: strength

A
  1. informed consent given and ptcpts debriefed
  2. Students had as much time to read over the article therefore limited amount of stress caused

Q

ecological validity: strengths and weakness

A
  1. ptcpts given material very similar to course material they would receive at uni. They were also told to ‘treat this as a class assignment. This is a strength as it can be better generalised to students educational settings.
  2. ptcpts given 30 minutes to study the material and therefore may not reflect genuine studying habits of students

7
Q

validity: weakness

A

No qualitative data which reduces validity as the interpretations of behaviour are subjective to what experimenters deduce and not necessarily what the participants were actually thinking

Q

reliability: strength and weakness

A
  1. not everyone has had the same amount of time to read the article
  2. standardised procedure through the same article, the same environment, all heard material through headphones

9
Q

sampling bias: strengths

A
  1. less time consuming to obtain as multiple ptcpts recruited at once
  2. easier to recruit ptcpts as all within uni environment

Q

sampling bias: weaknesses

A

snowball sample could have lacked generalisability due to having a group which would largely have the same characteristics (bias of who’s chosen)
