Grant et al on context- dependency effects Evaluation Flashcards
flab (field and lab) experiment: strengths
- high control for extraneous variables- highly standardised procedure as set instructions given for procedure
- mundane realism= good ecological validity- reading an article and trying to recall information mirrors the reality of students
flab (field and lab) experiment: weaknesses
due to varying conditions/ environments of study, extraneous variables may be hard to control for
quantitative data: strengths
easy presentation and analysis of results- can easily compare conditions
quantitative data: weaknesses
lack of qualitative data decreases insight towards ptcpts thought processes throughout experiment
ethical considerations: strength
- informed consent given and ptcpts debriefed
- Students had as much time to read over the article therefore limited amount of stress caused
ecological validity: strengths and weakness
- ptcpts given material very similar to course material they would receive at uni. They were also told to ‘treat this as a class assignment. This is a strength as it can be better generalised to students educational settings.
- ptcpts given 30 minutes to study the material and therefore may not reflect genuine studying habits of students
validity: weakness
No qualitative data which reduces validity as the interpretations of behaviour are subjective to what experimenters deduce and not necessarily what the participants were actually thinking
reliability: strength and weakness
- not everyone has had the same amount of time to read the article
- standardised procedure through the same article, the same environment, all heard material through headphones
sampling bias: strengths
- less time consuming to obtain as multiple ptcpts recruited at once
- easier to recruit ptcpts as all within uni environment
sampling bias: weaknesses
snowball sample could have lacked generalisability due to having a group which would largely have the same characteristics (bias of who’s chosen)
