the aim of the Loftus and Palmer study was to investigate the effect of language (in particular leading questions) on memory.

45 participants, split into 5 conditions with 9 participants in each condition

changing the words in the critical question about the speed of the car
procedure
all participants were given 7 video clips to watch, and were given questionnaire to fill out after each clip. to avoid order effects they were shown the videos in random order
they were asked about the speed of the car, with the critical verb being replaced inn each of the 5 groups

smashed, collided, bumped, hit and contacted
results of smashed condition
mean mph= 40.8 mph
results of contacted condition
mean mph= 31.8
aim of experiment 2
to see if the participants in the smashed condition were more likely to say there were broken glass 1 week later, which was compared to a hit condition and a control group not asked about the critical verb
sample of experiment 2
150 students split into smashed, hit and control condition, 50 participants in each group
procedure- question said in questionnaire 1
after the videos were shown, about how fast were the cars going when they ______ into each other
question asked in questionnaire 2
10 questions about the accident, with one question saying ‘did you see broken glass’ with a yes and no answer box
