bocchiaro Flashcards
background
whistleblowers are people who report wrongdoing to higher authorities
aims
oto create a situation which allowed them to see if people obeyed, disobeyed, whistle blew whilst an authority figure was encouraging immoral behaviour
to identify whether whistleblowers had distinguishable personality characteristics
hypothesis
more participants will obey than in milgram’s study because there is no physical aggression involved
a lower level of whistleblowing than disobedience because it has potential for direct confrontation with the unjust authority
sample
149 vu university undergraduate students (paid €7 from a flyer in cafe)
why was there 8 pilot studies created before
to ensure that it was moral and credible before conducting the real thing, and ensuring there was a standardised procedure for all participants
room 1 of the procedure
preliminary stage, they were greeted with a stern and well dressed experimenter who asked them to write down 5 names who could be willing to take part of the study
they were told about a sensory deprivation study previously conducted in italy, and how there were unethical after effects such as panicking and cognitive functions being temporarily impaired
they said they wanted to replicate it
they had 3 mins to think about this decision
room 2 of the procedure
they were taken into a new room with a computer and could either: write a statement saying they should partake in it, or they could tick an ethics committee box and mail it
they had 7 mins to do this
what happened in the follow up back in room 1
they were debriefed and were told not to discuss this to other colleagues
