Locus of Control Flashcards
1
Q
What is Locus of control an example of
A
Resistance to social roles
2
Q
Who proposed the idea of Loc
A
Rotter
3
Q
What did Rotter propose about Loc
A
Proposed the idea of internal and external loc, how there is a continuum (scale) and there are different levels such as a high internal or a high external
4
Q
What is internal loc
A
Belief that control is within their own hands
5
Q
What is external loc
A
Belief that control is not within their own hands
6
Q
Which type of Loc is more likely to be resistant to social influence
A
- Internal loc
7
Q
Why is someone with an internal loc more likely to resist social influence
A
- Internal loc is more likely to resist due to
(1) taking personal responsibly of actions therefore more likely to act on own personal morals
(2) more confident, achievement orientated, higher intelligence therefore feel less of a need for social approval and have greater resistance

Q
EV - Supporting evidence
A
- Holland repeated Milgrams study, and measured whether participants where externals and internals
- 37% of internals did not continue to the highest shock level, only 23% of externals didn’t
- Internals showed a greater resistance, therefore, Loc has impact on resistance, increasing validity
9
Q
EV - Not all research supports role of Loc
A
- Twenge et al analysed data from over 40yrs
- People have become more independent but more external
- If resistance linked to internal Loc we would expect more internals
- Loc may not be a valid explanation
