Locus of Control Flashcards
Why can’t people resist the pressure to conform or obey in some cases?
Due to the personality
what is locus of control (rotter 1966)
-The extent to which people believe they have control over their own lives
What is locus of controlled measured on?
-Continuum and an individual with either have internal or external and their schools will force somewhere between the two extremes of the continuum
What is internal locus of control?
-people with this, believe that what happens in their life is largely the result of their own behaviour and that they have control
-Rutter proposes that the individuals with this would be better at resisting social pressures as they feel in control of situations (feel they take personal responsibility for their actions and make decisions based on their own beliefs
What are people with an internal locus of control more likely to be and what do these traits lead to?
self-confident, intelligent and achievement oriented- traits lead to greater resistance to conformity and obedience as they have less need for approval and are more able to resist social influence
what is face validity?
a type of validity whereby something appears (on the face of it) to be measuring what it set out to measure
Where is external locus of control?
-people with this believe that what happens to them is controlled by external factors, such as luck and fate-less likely to resist as they feel they do not have complete control over their life
-they believe that things are not a certain way regardless of their actions and so are less able to resist social influence
