Locke "Property" Flashcards
natural right to preservation
all humans have the natural right to preserve their lives by being born
also grants humans the right to access nature’s natural resources (food, water, and other necessities that support human life)
divine grant of the earth
god has given humankind the earth collectively
**share equally and as needed
people question how private property came to be if this was the foundation
act of appropriation
must be a way for people to appropriate resources –> only way they will be useful for individuals
**necessary for resources to serve their purpose –> supporting human life
Lockean proviso
every human has the right to access resources through their labor –> justified as long as they leave it in two states for the next person:
1) enough
2) as good
*act of appropriation –> checks it morally by preventing others from taking too much and depriving others of the means to sustain themselves
why is it necessary for humans to appropriate resources?
allows the resources to serve their purpose –> intrinsic usefulness for humans in preserving their life (aka their natural right when they are born)
can resources be utilized effectively without some form of ownership or control?
no, resources cannot be utilized effectively for anyone’s benefit unless some kind of order
should there be a universal monarch in control of resources?
no need for universe monarch to control property –> can emerge in other ways
