Mouth
Beginning of Digestive System.
Part of mechanical digestion and chews food to make it smaller.
Types of teeth: Canines, Incisors, Molars, Premolars
Esophagus
From your mouth to your stomach
Swallows food (allows food to travel to stomach)
Stomach
Upper Abdomen
Mixes food with gastric juices (chemical digestion) and starts to break it down.
Food can be there for 1-6 hours
Small Intestine
Lower Abdomen
3 parts: duodenum, jejunum and ileum.
Breaks down food, absorbs nutrients needed for the body, and gets rid of the unnecessary components.
Liver
The liver produces bile, which helps break down fats in food.
Gallbladder
The gallbladder stores bile until it is needed in the small intestine.
Pancreas
The pancreas produces enzymes that help break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in food.
Large Intestine
The large intestine absorbs water from undigested food and forms feces.
Rectum
The rectum stores feces until they are eliminated from the body through the anus.
Anus
The anus is an opening at the end of the digestive tract through which feces are eliminated from the body.
