Gas exchange in the alveoli Flashcards
1
Q
Steps of gas exchange
A
Oxygen from inhaled air diffuses through the walls of the alveoli and into the capillaries surrounding them.
The oxygen binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells, which then transport it to other parts of the body.
Carbon dioxide produced by cells in the body diffuses into the capillaries and is carried back to the alveoli.
Carbon dioxide then diffuses out of the capillaries and into the alveoli, where it is exhaled out of the body.
