Location Of Research Flashcards
What is a laboratory experiment
A research method conducted in a controlled setting whereby the researcher manipulates the IV and measures the DV
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a laboratory experiment
+ high control of extraneous variables so a cause and effect can be easily established
+ easy to replicate to ensure reliability
- low ecological validity
- demand characteristics are likely from artificial environment
What is a field experiment
A research method conducted in a natural setting whereby the researcher manipulates the IV and measures the DV, the researcher goes into the participants environment
What are the advantages and disadvantages of field research
+ high ecological validity
+ less chance of demand characteristics
- low control of extraneous variables, so difficult to establish cause and effect
- more difficult to replicate the research
What is an online experiment
An experiment conducted online, normally a questionnaire that has easy access for participants
What are the advantages and disadvantages of an online experiment
+ access to a large number of participants
+ cost effective research
- limited to surveys and questionnaires
- ethical issues such as consent and protection from harm
- participants may misinterpret questions
