Localisation of Function Flashcards
What is localisation of function?
The idea that different parts of the brain perform different tasks and are responsible for different actions
What connects the two hemispheres?
The corpus callosum
What is the corpus callosum?
A bundle of fibres that is a communication pathway that allows the hemispheres to exchange information
Why is the brain contralateral?
The left hemisphere deals with the right side of the body and the right hemisphere deals with the left side of the body
What is hemispheric lateralisation?
The division of function between the two hemispheres
What is the left hemisphere responsible for?
It is where language processing occurs. Therefore if the left side of the brain is damaged then speech is affected
What areas of the brain are located in the left hemisphere?
Broca’s area and wernickes area
Where is the broacs area and what does it do?
The left side of the frontal lobe and speech production
Where is the wernickes area and what does it do?
The left side of the temporal lobe and language comprehension
What is the right hemisphere responsible for?
It is dominant for recognising emotions and spatial relationships
What are the overall differences between the left and right hemisphere?
There is a greater level of activity in the left hemisphere to identify small detail but the right looks at the picture holistically
