The autonomic nervous system, specifically the sympathetic branch
What is the fight or flight response for?
A reflex response designed to help an individual manage physically when under threat
What is the process of the fight or flight response?
The stressor activates the hypothalamus. This activates the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system and it activates the adrenal medulla. This then releases the hormone adrenaline
What does adrenaline cause to increase?
Heart rate, blood pressure, glucose release, respiration , perspiration, muscle tension and blood clotting
What does adrenaline cause to decrease?
Digestion
What is the role of the parasympathetic nervous system?
It returns the body back to its resting state
What can this response be referred to?
The rest and digest response
