A city charter is like a constitution. It describes the type of city government, it’s structure, and it’s powers
What is a municipality?
Am incorporated placement, an area with an organized government that provides services to its residences
What is home rule?
Under home rule, cities have the power to write their own city charter, chose their own government, and manage affairs
What is an ordinance?
A city law
What is a strong mayor system?
It is when the mayor has the power to veto laws passed by the city council, appoint head department heads, and write the budget
What is a weak mayor system?
It is when the mayors power is limited. The mayor runs the city council meetings but will only vote if there is a tie
What is Council Manager Form?
In the council manager form of government, an elected city council hires a city manager. Then the city manager draws up a budget and oversees city departments
What is a special district?
A unit of government formed to handle one task
What is a metropolitan area?
An area that is a city and the suburbs around it
