What does a Security Council do?
Smaller body of the United Nation- deals with immediate threats to world peace; has five permanent members: United States, Russia, Great Britain, France, and China (ten other members are elected to a 2 year term)
What does a General Assembly do?
Main forum for the United Nation’s 192 member nations. Every member has a voice there
What does a International Court do?
Settles legal disputes between nations
What does a Economic and Social Council do?
Goal is to promote economic growth
What does the United Nations Children’s Fund do?
Works to improve children’s lives
What does the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization do?
Promotes science, education and culture
What does the North Atlantic Treaty Organization do?
Includes 28 in North America and Europe; goals are to keep peace and defend members in war; may send armed forces to crisis areas; works with other nations to prevent conflict
What does the World Trade Organization do?
Promotes free trade; 150 member nations; encourages member nations to remove trade barriers
What does the World Health Organization do?
Part of the United Nation; improves health for all people; fights and prevents disease; helps countries meet health standards; end smallpox; teaches people about the HIV virus
What does the Peace Corps do?
Volunteer group run by US government, now has volunteers working in 77 countries; helps Americans and other world citizens understand each other; promote public health; teach people to use technology for business development
What does the International Committee of the Red Cross do?
Based on Switzerland; unites efforts of Red Cross and Red Crescent groups around the world; provides aid to victims of war or natural disasters; maintains a neutral position in wars
