What is legislation?
Legislation protects all groups of people in society, it provides individuals with rights to which they are entitled to by law.
What does legislation do?
Provides a framework to maintain and improve quality of practice.
Provides guidance for those who work in the health, social care and early years sector.
Sets out the standard of practice and conduct those who work in the health, social and childcare sectors.

The key aspects of the equality act 2010 are?
There should be no harassment or victimisation
Discrimination in settings is not aloud
Settings must be accessible
Women have the right to breast feed in public
Discrimination on the basis of a protected characteristic is illegal.
What are the key aspects of the health and safety at work 1974 act?
The working environment must ensure that it puts no body at risk.
The equipment is safe to use.
There is health and safety training available.
A written health and safety policy
Health and safety procedures put in place.
Settings must have fire doors, fire alarms and extinguishers.
Health and safety signs
Adequate first aid available
What are the key aspects of the data protection act 1998?
Processed fairly and lawfully Used only for the purposes for which it was intended. Adequate and relevant but not excessive Accurate and kept up to date Kept for no longer than necessary Processed in line with the rights of the individuals. Secured Not transferred to other countries
What are the key aspects of the children’s act 2004?
Protect children at risk
Paramount health principle- child’s needs must come first
Right to be consulted
Right to an advocate
Every child matters- 5 outcomes: staying safe, being healthy, enjoying and achieving, make a positive contribution and economic well being.
What are the key aspects of the mental health act 2007?
Gives relatives, social workers and approved doctors the right to have a person detained under the act for their own safety.
A person with a mental disorder can be treated with out their consent.
Detention is for the purpose of assessment for 28 days.
The legislation does not apply to everyone with a mental health disorder.
