what is the definition of discriminitory practise?
developing attitudes and beliefs that result in unfair treatment
what are the 8 factors that cause discrimination?
1- race = racism 2- culture 3- social class 4- age = ageism 5- gender = sexism 6- religion 7- sexual orientation = homophobia 8- disability = disabelism
what are the two types of discrimination? define them
- direct = purposely putting someone at a disadvantage eg. deliberately not employing someone because of their gender.
- indirect = accidentally putting some one at a disadvantage eg. a companies policy excludes someone
what are the 5 types of abuse?
1- physical 2- neglect 3- verbal 4- sexual 5- psychological (emotional)
1- physical
- what is this?
- example?
- occurs when someone causes physical pain or threatens to hurt someone
eg; a carer held a vulnerable elderly person too roughly and bruised them
2- neglect;
- what is it?
- example?
- a carer fails to care for someone properly and leaves them on their own
- carer not providing basic needs such as warmth, food and clean clothing
3- verbal;
- what is it?
- example?
- name calling, insulting or swearing at someone to humilliate them and reduce there dignity
- a teacher calling a student ‘stupid’ because they don’t understand something in lesson and everyone else does.
4- sexual;
- what is it?
- example?
- unwanted and unconsented sexual contact
- a care assistant inappropriately touching a vulnerable patient when changing them
5- psychological:
- what is it?
- example?
- treats and constant criticism to effect someone’s emotional state to undermine them
- a teacher telling a student they cant dos something to make them feel useless

- prejudice = negative attitude/ unfair dislike to an ind./group
- labelling = identifying someone as belonging to a gore bc of their characteristics and so treating them negatively as a consequence
- stereotyping = making judgements about a person/ group based on one of their characteristics
- bullying = repeatedly behaving negatively towards an individual to cause physical or psychological harm
what are the 4 ways discrimination can affect an individual? add examples for each
1- physically = lack of sleep, stress, not eating
2- emotionally = worrying, sadness, low self esteem
3- intellectually = low attendance, attainment and concentration
4- socially = lack of trust when forming relationships

disempowerment:
having a lack of control over your life bc of someone abusing them or discriminating against them
low self esteem:
self esteem and confidence can be destroyed leading to them feeling worthless and depressed
poor health and well-being:
victims may become with drawn and isolated from certain situations in fear of further ill treatment. if an ind. is already ill, further deterioration can occur.
