Cultural Stereotypes
General assumptions, sometimes based on information that is not correct or incomplete.
An example, Boys are better at math than girls.
Cultural Universal
trait common to all cultures
Examples are gender roles, marriage, art, dance, music, cooking, and death.
Cultural Accommodation
In harmony with a minority culture, but
keeps cultural identify.
Natives to a country who respect the cultural differences of immigrants are culturally accommodating.
Assimilate
When you replace most of their home culture with the new culture.
Acculturation
When one culture takes on some cultural traits of another culture.
Example, European countries adopted American trends after watching Hollywood movies.
Cultural Relativism
When you promote understanding of culture rather than it being “wrong”.
Examples are eating insects, genocides, genital cutting.
Culturally Responsive Teaching
An approach that recognizes the importance of including students’ cultures in all aspects of learning.
Learning about students’ backgrounds and interests.
Transformative Approach
When teachers seek to change the curriculum to be culturally inclusive.
Example, a history class studying a war read texts from various perspectives written by individuals holding different roles from opposing sides.
Ethnocentrism
The belief or view that your culture or society is better than any others.
An example is saying democracy is the very best way to run a government.
Diversity
Representations of people with their different cultures, which can be in language, social status, age, ethnicity, or other traits within a group.
Many schools today.
Biculturalism
The presence of at least two distinct cultures in a specific area or region.
Example; Switzerland = strong presence of several cultures and multiple languages.
Intergroup Differences
The differences between cultures.
Examples are religion, language, and social status.
Advocacy Strategies
The ways to support a cause or group.
Example: welcoming families shows community involvement.
Affective Filter
The emotional influences on learning.
Examples are anxiety, attitude, inhibition, self-esteem all affect a student’s learning experience.
Linguistic Domain
Language skills with annual measurable objectives to grow one proficiency level each year or to reach full proficiency.
Social Action Approach
A transformative approach combined with activities that strive for social change.
Example: when students do something to make an impact on a social issue.
Cultural Contact
When people from different cultures come in contact with each other.
Folktale
Are stories that are orally passed through generations.
Example: Three Little Pigs.
Additive Approach
Is when you add resources to general curriculum.
Example: Cinderella stories from various cultures to her lessons.
Affective Domain
Emotional skills and appropriate reactions.
Appropriateness
Is the subject matter appropriate for the students’ maturity level.
Cultural Pluralism
When different cultures co-existing in a society and their practices are accepted by others.
Universal Theme
Are when common ideas that appear in literature across all cultures.
Examples include love, courage, friendship, good succeeding over evil.
Cultural Sensitivity
When dealing with difficult topics you considering how the different cultures would interpret.
Contributions Approach
Are when books and activities representing different cultures are added to the curriculum.
An Example: students learn about Irish culture on St. Patrick’s Day.
Culture Shock
The disorientation and discomfort. There are 4 phases which are 1) Honeymoon stage, 2) frustration stage - homesick, 3) adjustment stage, and 4) acceptance stage.
Intragroup Differences
Are the differences within a culture. These included political party or religious affiliations.
Cultural Congruence
Is a teacher’s respect for students’ cultural backgrounds.
It is a culturally responsive classroom.
