Living Things and Cells Flashcards
MRSFERG
Movement respiration sensitivity feeding excretion reproduction growth
Movement
Plants do not move from place to place. They move when they grow or when a flower opens and closes it’s petals.
Respiration
Respiration is the way living things get energy. They take in oxygen and mix it with food to get energy.
Sensitivity
Sensitivity is the ability to react to changes in the environment. Animals will run away from danger, a plant will grow towards sunlight.
Feeding
Animals do not make their own food.
They get their food by eating plants and other animals. Plants make their own food.
Photosynthesis
The way In which plants make food is called photosynthesis.
They need a green dye called chlorophyll. This is why plants are green.
Excretion
Is the removal of waste made in the body, from the body. Animals excrete carbon dioxide, water, urea and salts.
Reproduction
Is being able to make new individuals of the same kind. E.g. babies, new plants, puppies.
Growth
Results from cell division.
Cell membrane
Very thin layer that surrounds the cell. Holds cell contents in place and controls what passes into and out of the cell.
Nucleus
Is normally round. It acts as the control centre of the cell. It has the DNA.
Cytoplasm
The watery liquid found between the nucleus and the cell membrane.
Mitochondria
Supply energy to the cell.
Cell wall
Found outside the cell membrane of a plant cell. Gives strength to the cell.
Vacuole
Space containing water, sugar and wastes - gives strength to the cell.
