Liver & Pancreas Flashcards
Pancreatic juice consist of:
Fats, carbs and proteins = pancreatic juice
Pancreas endocrine function
Glucagon, insulin and somatostatin
Function of spleen
blood reserve, destroys red blood cells and white blood cell production
Splenomegaly
Enlarged spleen
Right celiac trunk enters:
Hepatic artery
Left celiac trunk enters
Spleen, pancreas, duodenum -> gastric and splenic arteries
SMA enters
Posterior inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery (pancreas and lower duodenum via 1/3 colon)
Cholecystitis/Cholelithiasis
Cystic duct blockage = gallstones
4Fs
Right pain, scapula, right side
Cirrhosis
Low hepatocytes = high fibrous tissue
RFs = smoking. Hep B. OH. Fatty diet
Symp = jaundice, enlarged or shrunken liver. Ascites
Chronic alcoholism
Activates Stellate cells which causes pressure and narrows sinusoids = blood back up
Portal hypertension
No bloodflow in the liver Sinusoids
Location of pancreas head
Duodenum
Portal system contains
Esophagus
Umbilicus
Rectum
= drains into IVC = collateral circulation; problem = portal systemic anastomasis
Caput Medusa
Hepatic rupture
Trauma or fractured ribs
Cut off liver blood supply = liver regenerates
Splenic rupture
Most common
Internal pressure, 9th-12th rib fracture
Pancreatic rupture
Sudden trauma
Leakage in pancreatic juice = digestion of pancreatic tissue
Less common due to being deep in duodenum
Pancreatic cancer
Deadly bc shares blood supply with most abdominal organs and drainage of length, obstruction to bile duct, hepato pancreatic ampulla
Average age is 71, high death rate
Respecter’s are smoking, high-fat, obesity
Hepatic cancer
Respecter’s are hepatitis B/C, alcoholism, smoking, cirrhosis
