LIVER FUNCTION TEST Flashcards
- The chief metabolic organ
- A large organ divided unequally into two lobes by a falciform ligament
Liver
- functional unit of the liver.
- Responsible for its metabolic and excretory function.
Lobules
2 major cell types:
o Hepatocytes
o Kupffer cells
also known as the “hepatic macrophage”. Act as
phagocytes that lines the sinusoids of liver.
Kupffer cells
(80%), composed the majority of cells. Performs the major function of liver and its regenerative properties.
Hepatocytes
2 blood supply:
o Hepatic artery
o Portal vein
percentage of hepatic artery blood supply?
(25%)
percentage of Portal vein blood supply?
(75%)
amount of blood that goes in the liver
1500 mL of blood per minute
synthesize substance specifically proteins EXCEPT immunoglobulins
Synthetic function
for the metabolism of bilirubin
Conjugation function
protects the body from potential toxic substances absorbed by the intestine
Detoxification and drug metabolism
this includes bile elimination (including cholesterol and bile salts)
Excretory and Secretory function
acts as storage for fat soluble vitamins (A,D, E, K), some water soluble vitamins and glycogen
Storage function
T/F. TESTS FOR LIVER SYNTHETIC FUNCTION, Quantitates the severity of hepatic dysfunction.
True
TESTS FOR LIVER SYNTHETIC FUNCTION
A. TOTAL PROTEIN
B. ALBUMIN
C. ALBUMIN/GLOBULIN RATIO
D. PROTHROMBIN TEST
- Measures the totality of protein factors in the plasma
- Sum of albumin and globulin (TP= Albumin + Globulin)
- Assessment of nutritional status and presence of disease involving the liver, kidney and bone marrow
TOTAL PROTEIN
Sample needed for TOTAL PROTEIN
Serum
T/F. We never us plasma because it has fibrinogen, this can cause false increase by 0.2-0.4 g/dL)
True
Interference: TOTAL PROTEIN
o Hemolysis
o Icteric
red discoloration
Hemolysis
abnormal yellowish discoloration of serum and plasma
Icteric
Reference value (serum) for TOTAL PROTEIN
6.5-8.3 g/dL (CF to g/L: multiply by 10)
