Liver Function and Structure Flashcards
Describe the structure of the liver?
2 major lobes - left and right 2 minor lobes - Caudate and Quadrate (found within right lobe)
What is the function of the liver ?
Detoxification and secretion/production of bile
How is the liver peritonised?
Intraperitoneal (bare area is not covered)
What makes up bile?
Bile pigment, Bile Acid, Lecithin, Cholesterol, Detoxified Metal and Bicarbonate
What components of bile solubilise fat?
Bile Acid, Lecithin and Cholesterol
What are bile salts made up of?
Bile acid and taurine
What is the function of the sphincter of Oddi?
Controls the release of bile and pancreatic juice into the duodenum
What happens when the sphincter of Oddi is contracted?
bile is forced back into the gallbladder`
What occurs if there is fat in the duodenum?
CCK is released which relaxes the sphincter of oddi and the gallbladder contracts. Bile is discharged into duodenum and fat is solubilised
What makes up the portal triad?
Hepatic Portal Vein, Hepatic Artery, Hepatic Duct
Where does the hepatic vein drain?
The IVC
Bile acids Lecithin Cholesterol Bile Pigments Toxic Metals are all secreted by which cells?
Hepatocytes
What is billirubin made from,?
Haemoglobin
Where is the gallbladder found?
The inferior surface of the liver
What does the hepatic vein drain?
The liver
