Following the Brown verdict a decision was made to
Desegregate schools in Little Rock
Brown case led to the school board that Little Rock High school
Would desegregate on 3 Spetember 1957
The NAACP arranged for the
Black students to arrive together to the school
Faubus sent 250 state troops to surround the school.This prevented the
Black students from entering the school
Faubus said he sent the state troops to
” keep the peace “
Fabus was a
Fierce opponent to school integration
Elizabeth Exkford did not recieve the
Notification to arrive with the rest.She was targeted by the crowd and racially abused
District judges and NAACP lawyers challenged Faubus to
Force him to withdraw the troops
On 24 September President Eisenhower sent
Federal troops to ensure the black students could enter the school successfully
Why did the President have to intervene ?
Because of worldwide ,edia covergae of the event at Little Rock High School,forced Eisenhower to het invoved as USA’s image was being damaged abroad
Due to the hundreds of reporters from local and international news stations reported the event which led to
People being shocked at the media coverage of how children were being racially abused
Here was continued resisitance to school integration agter 1957 many schools in the south rather
Shut down then desegregate
The first black student graduate from Little Rock High School in 1958 but his
White classmate refused to sit with him in the ceremony
Even 10 years later black students attending newly integrated schools in the south were subjected to
Violence,intimidation and exclusion from teachers and classmates
