Lithosphere and the rock cycle Flashcards
Soil
Made up of eroded pieces of rock and organic matter.
Soil layers
1: Organic layer
2:Top soil
3: Subsoil
4: Parent material
5: Bedrock
Igneous rock
Formed by the cooling of molten magma
Sedimentary Rock
Formed by the deposition of smaller rock particles eroded by wind or water.
Solidifies due to pressure
Metamorphic Rock
Igneous or sedimentary rocks that have been altered due to heat, pressure and chemical change in the earth’s crust.
Always formed deep underground where there is high heat and pressure
Human impact on soil
The use of fertilizers lowers the pH of soil, preventing native plants from taking up nutrients.
Constant compression of soil due to heavy use of machinery and livestock results in constant compaction of soil
