Q

Carbon capture

A

In Australia, scientists are working to develop techniques to capture and store carbon during the burning of fossil fuels.
Carbon dioxide is captured before reaching the atmosphere.
It is then either stored underground (geological sequestration) or in seaweed farms (biological sequestration)

Q

Geological sequestration

A

Carbon dioxide can be stored deep underground.
Inside areas where fossil fuel gas was originally extracted.
Site requirements:
With rocks that are not permeable (gas can’t pass through).
Stable – not prone to earthquakes.
Not infiltrated by groundwater or prone to flooding

Q

Biological Sequestration

A

Through sea weed farms (photosynthesis).
Terrestrial plants are more prone to fire.
Kelps and large algae are efficient at storage carbon dioxide.

Q

Renewable energy

A

Renewable energy isenergy derived from natural sources that are replenished at a higher rate than they are consumed.
Examples of renewable energy are: sun (solar), wind, geothermal, hydropower and bioenergy
