Atmosphere and the carbon cycle Flashcards
Layers of the atmosphere
1: Troposphere
2: Stratosphere
3: Mesosphere
4:Thermosphere
5: Exosphere
Troposphere
Contains the breathable atmosphere (15 km upwards from sea level)
Stratosphere
Contains the Ozone layer (blocks UV rays)
Photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide +Water –Light & Chlorophyll– Glucose + Oxygen
Aerobic respiration
helps organisms breakdown breakdown glucose to make energy
Glucose + Oxygen — Carbon dioxide + water + energy
Carbon Oxygen Cycle
Carbon dioxide is used in the process of photosynthesis and returned to the atmosphere in respiration
The carbon is stored as part of glucose and starch. It then moves up the food chain when animals eat plants
The balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide is maintained by organisms undertaking photosynthesis and respiration
Human Impact on the carbon cycle
Burning fossil fuels – releases CO2 into the atmosphere increasing CO2 levels in the atmosphere
Deforestation – reduces amount of CO2 absorbed by trees (less photosynthesis) increasing the CO2 in the atmosphere
