Metaphor
Refers to one thing by mentioning another, with similarities between the two ideas.
Allusion
When an object or circumstance is referred to indirectly.
Anaphora
A deliberate repetition of the first part of the sentence in order to achieve an artistic effect.
Personification
When inanimate objects are given human-like qualities.
Juxtaposition
Comparing two elements close together to point out their contrasting qualities.
Simile
Figure of speech that directly compares two things using “like” and “as”.
Parallelism
The use of components in a sentence that are grammatically the same or similar in their construction, sound, or meaning.
Antithesis
Being so far apart as to be in sharp contrast or conflict.
