What is gender?
“The non-physiological aspects of being male or female - the cultural expectations for femininity and masculinity” (Lips, 2008, p5).
What are the expected behaviours of gender?
Abilities, preferences, self-concept, personality, behaviours, values/attitudes, stereotypes, roles.
What is sex?
The biological classification as either male or female - relates to anatomical differences.
What are the 5 measures of biological sex?
- Genetic/chromosomal sex (XX or XY)
- Gonadal sex - sex organs which secrete hormones (ovaries or testes)
- Hormonal sex (androgens it oestrogen’s)
- External genital sex ( penis, scrotum or outer vagina)
- Internal genital sex (prostate, sperm ducts, seminal ves., testes or ovaries, fallopian tube, womb)
What is a gender stereotype?
Widely held beliefs or assumptions about male and female abilities, personality, traits, and social behaviours (culturally constructed).
What is a gender role?
Behaviours that a particular society considers appropriate for males and females.
What is gender identity?
Refers to one’s sense of oneself as male, female, or something else (American Psychological Association, 2006).
