Bathos
a figure of speech that involves a sudden drop from the most important to the trivial. Unintended transition from the exalted to the common place making a ludicrous effect.
ex: I will love you forever, our hearts will beat as one, and yes, I will take out the garbage.
Blank verse
unrhymed lines of iambic pentameter. It mimcs the way we talk.
ex:The (dreams) are (clues) that (tell) us (take) chan(ces.)
Caesura
a pause or break in the middle of the line in poetry indicated with //.
ex: Boll weevil’s coming// and the winter’s cold
cause & effect
two events that are related when one event brings about the other.
ex: i forgot to turn on my alarm is the cause and the effect i was late to school.
character
a person, animal, or imiginary creature that takes part in the action of a literary work
ex: Oedipus is the main character of Oedipus Rex
