Foreshadow
hints or clues that suggest future events in a story for building suspense.
ex: In the prologue of Romeo and Juliet, it gives hints to the inevitable suicide of the two lovers but doesn’t say how.
Free Verse
poetry that does not follow regular patterns or rhyme and meter. Flow more naturally to achieve a rhythm like everyday speech.
ex: After the Sea-Ship by Walt Whitman
Generic Conventions
Traditions of each genre that help to define each genre.
ex: Almost all Westerns use the Iconography of cowboy hats, six shooters, horses and spurs to place them in their genre.
Genre
The major category into which a literary work fits. Genre is a broad context and inside the main divisions of literature there’s subdivisions between the others.
ex: Basic divisions of literature are prose, poetry and drama.
Homily
The term literally mean sermon, but more informally it can include any serious talk, speech or lecture involving moral or spiritual advice.
ex:A Christian pastor might read an expert form the Bible and offer a perspective on how that passage might be applied.
