Allegory
A symbol of something where characters or events represent symbols or concepts
EX: Lord of the Flies is an allegory of good vs. evil
Allusion
An allusion is a type of metaphor and can be connected to what’s popular. Like music, fashion, literature, movies, art, etc. what is commonly known.
EX: “An allusion to the Hunger Games”
Simile
A figure of speech where two things that are not related at all are compared.
EX: “He is like a shark”
Metaphor
A metaphor is saying one thing is something else; like a symbol
EX: I am a rock.
Hyperbole
An over exaggeration of something used for emphasis.
EX: It has been raining for a billion years!
Imagery
Mental images of something; descriptive. Writing to what appeals to the senses. Painting a picture with words.
EX: “The imagery of her daydreams came to life.”
Inference
To come to a conclusion of logical reasoning. To make an educated guess.
EX: I made an inference about my surprise party for my 16th birthday because my family pretended to forget it.
Parody
A joke on a play, movie, book, song, etc. It mocks or makes fun of the original.
EX: Space balls is a parody of star wars.
Verbal Irony
Irony used in speech or writing when a person says one thing but means another.
Situational Irony
Irony displayed with an action. When something is done with a certain intention, but the opposite effect occurs.
Dramatic Irony
Ironic Situations that contain drama. When the viewers understand what is happening, but the characters do not.
Onomatopoeia
Sound out into words
EX: Boom! Yahoo! Crash!
Satire
Sarcasm or irony when making fun of something like people involved in politics. Mocking of ideas or characters in a society group.
Point of view
An opinion, stand point, or the way someone sees something.
EX: “Her point of view was the complete opposite of his” Perspective from which a story is told.
Setting
The location of where something takes place.
